St. John's in the Vale

St. John's in the Vale

Seen from above Thirlspot the dark brooding bulk of Blencathra dominates a peaceful sunlit St. John’s in the Vale.

Borrowdale

Borrowdale

The lush fertile fields and wooded slopes of Borrowdale owe much to the copious rainfall attracted by the high fells beyond. The stark grandeur of this skyline includes such favourites as Glaramara, The Scafells and Great Gable.

Bassenthwaite marshes from Dodd Wood

Bassenthwaite marshes from Dodd Wood

This scene of the marshland which separates Bassenthwaite Lake from Derwentwater, was taken from one of the forest roads on Dodd Wood, with the Derwent Fells, Whinlatter Pass and Thornthwaite on the other side of the valley, peering through the mist.

Newlands Valley

Newlands Valley

This picture of the Newlands Valley shows the well-known ridges leading up to Hindscarth on the left and Robinson on the right. This area in days gone by has seen great mining times, a thriving community winning various metals and ores from deep inside the fells. Remnants of the old, aptly named, Goldscope mine can be seen among the bracken of Scope End.

Thirlmere

Thirlmere

With the high ground of Helvellyn on its eastern shore Thirlmere can display many dramatic moods according to the prevailing weather conditions. This autumnal morning shows a particularly fine blend of clouds, mists and sunshine, with the still lake contrasting well with the forested fellsides.

Derwentwater

Derwentwater

The lower slopes of Cat Bells bestow particularly fine views of Derwentwater, here seen with part of Keswick on the far shore, Latrigg beyond and with the hulk of Blencathra forming a distinctive background in the distance.
